ARITHMETIC CONCEPTS OF KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN IN CONTRASTING SOCIOECONOMIC AREAS.
MONTAGUE, DAVID O.
TWO GROUPS OF KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN FROM CONTRASTING SOCIOECONOMIC AREAS WERE STUDIED TO EXPLORE WHAT EFFECT THEIR BACKGROUND WOULD HAVE ON THEIR ARITHMETIC CONCEPTS. THE FIRST GROUP FROM A LOW SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS (SES) AREA WAS COMPOSED OF 32 NEGRO, 14 CAUCASIAN, AND THREE ORIENTAL CHILDREN OF BOTH SEXES, AND THE CONTRASTING HIGH SES GROUP HAD 29 CAUCASIAN AND TWO ORIENTAL CHILDREN OF BOTH SEXES. THE TEACHERS IN THE ARITHMETIC PROGRAM THAT EACH GROUP RECEIVED IN THEIR RESPECTIVE SCHOOLS WERE AS NEARLY COMPARABLE IN EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND AS POSSIBLE. NEITHER TEACHER USED A FORMAL OUTLINE BUT TAUGHT CONCEPTS AS OPPORTUNITY AROSE. THE CHILDREN'S ARITHMETIC CONCEPTS WERE TESTED AFTER RECEIVING THE INSTRUCTION BY ARDEN RUDDELL'S ARITHMETIC CONCEPTS INVENTORY FOR KINDERGARTEN AND ENTERING FIRST GRADE, WHICH HAS SECTIONS ON ENUMERATION, QUANTITATIVE RELATIONSHIPS, SYMBOL RECOGNITION, SOCIAL USAGE, AND PROBLEM SOLVING. THE FINDINGS SHOWED A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CHILDREN'S ARITHMETIC CONCEPTS AND THEIR SOCIOECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT, THE KINDERGARTENERS IN THE HIGH SES GROUP HAVING SCORED HIGHER. ALSO, THE WIDE RANGE IN THE SCORES OF THE LOW SES GROUP SUGGESTS A NEED FOR LOWER PUPIL-TEACHER RATIO TO PERMIT MORE INDIVIDUAL INSTRUCTION. AVAILABLE FROM THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL JOURNAL, 64(7)393-397, APRIL 1964, PRICE $1.00. (NH)
