PROBABILITY ESTIMATES OF THE CAPACITIES OF INTERMEDIATE PUPILS TO UNDERSTAND SELECTED PHYSICAL SCIENCE GENERALIZATIONS. FINAL REPORT.
SMITH, GARY R.
THE CAPACITY OF INTERMEDIATE PUPILS TO UNDERSTAND AND RETAIN GENERALIZATIONS RELATED TO SIMPLE MACHINES, ELECTRICAL ENERGY, AND HEAT ENERGY WAS INVESTIGATED. A STRATIFIED RANDOM SAMPLE OF APPROXIMATELY 1,200 FOURTH, FIFTH, AND SIXTH GRADE PUPILS WAS SELECTED FROM THE METROPOLITAN DETROIT AREA. GENERALIZATIONS FOR THE THREE PHYSICAL SCIENCE AREAS WERE SELECTED AND VALIDATED. TEACHING UNITS WERE DEVELOPED, AND A MULTIPLE-CHOICE TEST WAS CONSTRUCTED FOR EACH UNIT. THE UNIT TESTS WERE GIVEN BEFORE INSTRUCTION, IMMEDIATELY AFTER INSTRUCTION, AND THREE TO FIVE MONTHS AFTER INSTRUCTION HAD BEEN COMPLETED. STANDARDIZED TESTS OF READING COMPREHENSION, SCIENCE ACHIEVEMENT, AND VERBAL INTELLIGENCE WERE ALSO USED. A COMPUTER PROGRAM WAS DEVELOPED TO PROVIDE A DIAGNOSTIC FILE FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL STUDENT. THE RESULTS FOR THE STUDY PROVIDE PROBABILITY ESTIMATES OF THE INTERMEDIATE PUPILS' SUCCESS IN UNDERSTANDING MAJOR IDEAS ABOUT SIMPLE MACHINES, ELECTRICAL ENERGY, AND HEAT ENERGY. RESULTS OF THE STUDY INDICATE (1) THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE IN PUPIL ACHIEVEMENT WHEN COMPARING INSTRUCTION BY SCIENCE SPECIALISTS AND NON-SPECIALISTS, AND (2) PUPILS IN LOW SOCIOECONOMIC GROUPS SCORED SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN PUPILS IN HIGH SOCIOECONOMIC GROUPS. UNIT PLANS, EVALUATION MATERIALS, AND AN EXTENSIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY ARE PROVIDED. (DS)
