DEPARTMENTALIZATION IS A FORM OF GROUPING FOR INSTRUCTION, AN ADMINISTRATIVE METHOD FOR ASSIGNING PUPILS TO TEACHERS IN SOME PLANNED MANNER. SOME PRECEDENTS FOR THE RECENT REVIVAL OF DEPARTMENTALIZATION IN THE ELEMENTARY GRADES ARE CITED. THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLES OF DEPARTMENTALIZATION ORGANIZATION ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL--A PROGRAM INVOLVING PRESCHOOL CHILDREN FROM CULTURALLY DEPRIVED AREAS BEING CONDUCTED BY CARL BEREITER AND SIEGFRIED ENGELMANN IN ILLINOIS, TWO SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE SCHOOLS IN THE SAN JUAN UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, AND A READING PROGRAM AT THE SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL.
