THIS STUDY IS AN ATTEMPT TO DETERMINE AND COMPARE THE STATUS AND DEGREE OF CHANGE IN SELECTED EDUCATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS AMONG THREE GROUPS OF CHILDREN WHO ENTERED CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY KINDERGARTEN IN SEPTEMBER 1965. THERE WERE 300 CHILDREN DIVIDED INTO THREE MAJOR GROUPS (1) 102 CHILDREN WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE SUMMER HEAD START PROGRAM, (2) 100 CHILDREN WHO DID NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE HEAD START PROGRAM AND WERE CULTURALLY DISADVANTAGED, AND (3) 98 CHILDREN WHO WERE NON-CULTURALLY DISADVANTAGED. THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT PARTICIPATION IN HEAD START IS RELATED TO IMPROVEMENT IN CONCEPTUAL MATURITY, BUT NOT TO THE DEGREE THAT THE EFFECTS OF POVERTY ARE OVERCOME. TAKING THE RESULTS OF THE TESTS GIVEN THE CHILDREN IN NOVEMBER AND MAY OF THEIR KINDERGARTEN YEAR INTO CONSIDERATION, THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THAT IT MIGHT BE CONSIDERED JUSTIFIABLE TO GROUP HEAD START CHILDREN INTO SEPARATE KINDERGARTEN CLASSES IN WHICH IT IS POSSIBLE TO TAKE FULLEST ADVANTAGE OF POSSIBLE LEARNING GAINS.
