THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN NORTH CAROLINA, PROCEEDINGS OF A STATE CONFERENCE (CHARLOTTE, JULY 25-29, 1966). 25-29, 1966).
CONE, BONNIE E.; VAIRO, PHILIP D.
THIS CONFERENCE COVERED SEVERAL ASPECTS OF THE HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY, AND FUNCTION OF THE JUNIOR COLLEGE, WITH EMPHASIS ON THE ROLE OF THE ADMINISTRATOR, THE PREPARATION OF TEACHERS, AND ACCREDITATION. THE ADMINISTRATOR HAS A MULTIPLE-SERVICE ROLE, IN WHICH HE MUST BE NOT ONLY EDUCATIONAL LEADER, BUT ALSO ORGANIZER, PERSONNEL MANAGER, FINANCE OFFICER, PUBLIC RELATIONS MAN, AND INNOVATOR. A PROPOSED 6-YEAR PROGRAM FOR THE PREPARATION OF TEACHERS WOULD COMPRISE TWO YEARS OF GENERAL EDUCATION AND FOUR YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION TO INCLUDE MAINLY SUBJECT MATTER, BUT ALSO SOME PSYCHOLOGY FOR THE UNDERSTANDING OF STUDENTS AND OF THE LEARNING PROCESS, A SUPERVISED INTERNSHIP PROGRAM, AND CONTINUING INSERVICE TRAINING. ACCREDITATION IS DEFINED AS THE RECOGNITION OF THE ACADEMIC RESPECTABILITY OF AN INSTITUTION THAT MEETS STANDARDS OF ACHIEVEMENT ESTABLISHED BY A COMPETENT AGENCY. THERE ARE PRESENTLY SIX ACCREDITING ASSOCIATIONS, WITH SLIGHT DIFFERENCES IN POLICIES AND PROCEDURES. FIVE ADVANTAGES OF ACCREDITATION ARE (1) ITS RECOGNITION AS THE MARK OF QUALITY FOR MORE THAN LOCAL ACCEPTANCE, (2) THE INTERCHANGE OF IDEAS WITHIN A REGION FOR THE BETTERMENT OF ALL THE INSTITUTIONS, (3) SUPPORT IN THE SEARCH FOR FUNDS, (4) THE PROTECTION GIVEN BY THE ASSOCIATION TO ALL EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS, TO THE MAINTENANCE OF HIGH STANDARDS, AND TO THE PUBLIC AGAINST MISREPRESENTATION, AND (5) STUDIES AND PROGRAMS SPONSORED BY THE ASSOCIATION FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL.
