A STUDY OF CURRICULA FOR EXISTING AND PROPOSED JUNIOR COLLEGES IN UTAH.
SELMAN, ORRIN MCEWAN
EXISTING JUNIOR COLLEGE PROGRAMS IN UTAH WERE SURVEYED TO ASSESS PRESENT AND FUTURE CURRICULAR NEEDS AND TO RECOMMEND GUIDELINES FOR A CURRICULAR PROGRAM FOR THE EXISTING AND PROJECTED JUNIOR COLLEGES IN UTAH. METHODS EMPLOYED IN GAINING BACKGROUND AND IN COLLECTING DATA WERE REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE, INTERVIEWS, CAMPUS VISITS, AND STUDY OF DOCUMENTS RELEVANT TO THE THREE JUNIOR COLLEGES IN UTAH. LITTLE CURRICULAR COORDINATION EXISTS AMONG THE UTAH JUNIOR COLLEGES. THE COLLEGES PROVIDE SOME TERMINAL EDUCATION BUT STRONGLY EMPHASIZE THE TRANSFER PROGRAM. MEAGER POST-HIGH SCHOOL TERMINAL EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES INDICATE THE NEED FOR MORE OFFERINGS IN THE TRADES AND IN TECHNICAL, MANAGERIAL, CLERICAL, AND SERVICE OCCUPATIONS. FOR UTAH, THE AUTHOR RECOMMENDS (1) A SINGLE GOVERNING BOARD FOR ALL JUNIOR COLLEGES, (2) ESTABLISHMENT OF CURRICULUM ADVISORY COMMITTEES, (3) A JUNIOR COLLEGE IN THE SALT LAKE METROPOLITAN AREA, (4) A BROAD, FLEXIBLE CURRICULUM IN EACH JUNIOR COLLEGE, DESIGNED TO MEET NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY AND STUDENTS AS DETERMINED BY SURVEYS, (5) EXPANSION OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION, AND (6) USE OF LOCAL COMMUNITY SURVEYS IN CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT. THIS ED.D. DISSERTATION IS AVAILABLE AS DOCUMENT NO. 66-7559, FOR $3.90 (MICROFILM) OR $13.75 (XEROGRAPHIC COPY) FROM UNIVERSITY MICROFILMS, INC., 313 NORTH FIRST STREET, ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN 48107.
