EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS IN VIRGINIA FOR FIELDS RELATED TO HEALTH.
MCGLOTHLIN, WILLIAM J.
FOR EACH OF 18 HEALTH RELATED OCCUPATIONS, THE REPORT IDENTIFIES MAJOR NEEDS, OUTLINES THE RELEVANT EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM, AND RECOMMENDS ACTION. COMMENTS GO BEYOND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ALONE, FOR IN SOME FIELDS THE PROBLEM FOR VIRGINIA IS NOT HOW TO EDUCATE MORE STUDENTS BUT HOW TO RETAIN MORE GRADUATES IN THE STATE. THE STUDY COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS THAT THE COMMUNITY COLLEGES HAVE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN PREPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION FOR THE HEALTH OCCUPATIONS REQUIRING A BACHELOR'S OR HIGHER DEGREE AND IN PREPARATION OF DENTAL ASSISTANTS, DIETARY AIDES, AND PHYSICAL THERAPY AIDES. TO ASSIST IN RELIEVING THE CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF REGISTERED NURSES, AS COMMUNITY COLLEGES ARE ORGANIZED, THEY SHOULD INCLUDE ASSOCIATE IN ARTS DEGREE NURSING PROGRAMS. (WO)
