A FREQUENCY COUNT OF CONTEMPORARY GERMAN VOCABULARY BASED ON THREE CURRENT LEADING NEWSPAPERS. FINAL REPORT.
SWENSON, RODNEY
THIS FREQUENCY LISTING OF CONTEMPORARY GERMAN VOCABULARY BASED ON A TABULATION OF A 584,000 WORD SAMPLE TAKEN FROM THREE WIDELY READ, GEOGRAPHICALLY REPRESENTATIVE WEST GERMAN NEWSPAPERS WAS DESIGNED, PRIMARILY, TO BE USED AS A PEDAGOGICAL TOOL BY TEACHERS AND STUDENTS, TEXT AND TEST WRITERS, CURRICULUM PLANNERS, AND RESEARCH SCHOLARS IN UPDATING LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION PRACTICES AND MATERIALS. REPRESENTATIVE OF A FAIRLY WELL-EDUCATED LEVEL OF JOURNALISTIC PROSE, THIS WORD STUDY INCLUDES BOTH NUMERICAL AND ALPHABETICAL LISTINGS OF 1,500 ITEMS CONSIDERED USEFUL IN UNDERSTANDING CONTEMPORARY GERMAN NEWSPAPER ACCOUNTS OF POLITICAL, RELIGIOUS, SPORTS, LITERARY, AND SCIENTIFIC EVENTS. TO FACILITATE A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF VOCABULARY ITEMS, THE NUMERICAL TABULATION IS A FREQUENCY-ARRANGED LISTING OF SELECTED WORDS FOR EACH NEWSPAPER AS WELL AS AN AGGREGATE USAGE TOTAL. THE ALPHABETICAL ANALYSIS THAT FOLLOWS INCORPORATES IN A SINGLE LISTING ONLY INFORMATION ABOUT TOTAL USAGE. (AB)
