THE ROLE, FUNCTION, AND STATUS OF NURSE TEACHERS IN THE SCHOOLS OF NEW YORK STATE WERE ANALYZED UTILIZING DATA FROM QUESTIONNAIRE RESPONSES OF 2677 NURSE TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATIVE PERSONNEL, SCHOOL PHYSICIANS, AND PARENTS. SPECIFIC FINDINGS WERE RELATED TO ROLE CONFLICT, WORK LOAD, CLERICAL DUTIES, TEACHING ROLE, TEACHING CERTIFICATION, AND NONPUBLIC SCHOOL SERVICES. RECOMMENDATIONS INCLUDED--(1) EVALUATION OF THE PRESENT SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAM WITH AN EMPHASIS ON REDUCTION OF NURSE TEACHER'S PUPIL LOAD AND CLERICAL DUTIES, (2) CLARIFICATION OF THE NURSE TEACHER'S EDUCATIONAL CONTRIBUTION, (3) EXTENSION OF PREPARATION STANDARDS AND PROGRAMS TO SERVE THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE SCHOOLS, AND (4) PARTICIPATION OF THE NURSE TEACHER IN THE FORMULATION OF SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES.
