NORTHERN OSTYAK CHRESTOMATHY. URALIC AND ALTAIC SERIES, VOLUME 47.
REDEI, KAROLY
THE INTRODUCTION TO THIS WORK ON THE OSTYAK LANGUAGE GIVES A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF ITS SPEAKERS, THE OSTYAKS (KHANTI), WHO LIVE IN THE NORTHWESTERN PART OF SIBERIA. A SHORT MENTION OF THE RESEARCH DONE AND AN EXTENSIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE LINGUISTIC LITERATURE CONCERNING OSTYAK (A FINNO-UGRIC LANGUAGE), ARE ALSO INCLUDED IN THE INTRODUCTION. THE TEXT ITSELF CONSISTS OF THREE SECTIONS--(1) A GRAMMATICAL OUTLINE OF OSTYAK, INCLUDING ITS PHONOLOGY AND MAIN SYNTACTICAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES, (2) A SELECTION OF SHORT TEXTS REPRESENTING SIX OSTYAK DIALECTS, AND (3) ENGLISH-OSTYAK GLOSSARIES INDEXED ACCORDING TO DIALECT. THE MATERIAL IS PRESENTED IN THE AUTHOR'S PHONEMIC TRANSCRIPTION RATHER THAN IN THE CYRILLIC SCRIPT, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SEVERAL EXTRACTS FROM THE LITERATURE. THE CONTENT ASSUMES A FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE OF LINGUISTICS ON THE PART OF THE READER.
