HIBBETT, HOWARD; ITASAKA, GEN
VOLUME II OF THIS INTRODUCTION TO WRITTEN JAPANESE CONTAINS 60 READING PASSAGES IN JAPANESE SCRIPT TO BE USED WITH THE VOCABULARY AND NOTES IN VOLUME I. THE READINGS ARE GRADED AND HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO REPRESENT GOOD MODERN JAPANESE USAGE. THE BEGINNING LESSONS ARE IN EASY INFORMAL STYLES AND ARE CONCERNED WITH THE JAPANESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE. LATER LESSONS INCLUDE SELECTIONS FROM THE WORK OF MODERN NOVELISTS AND INTRODUCE THE TRADITIONAL ORTHOGRAPHY (PRE-1946). LESSONS 1 TO 25 ARE SUPPLEMENTED BY SHORT ADDITIONAL TEXTS TO PROVIDE FURTHER PRACTICE IN USING CHARACTERS, VOCABULARY, AND STRUCTURES ALREADY PRESENTED. REFERENCE MATERIALS IN THIS VOLUME CONSIST OF--(1) A KANJI INDEX ARRANGED BY RADICAL AND NUMBER OF STROKES WITH A SUPPLEMENTARY LIST FOR HARD-TO-FIND CHARACTERS, (2) A TABLE SHOWING COMMON ABBREVIATED CHARACTERS, AND (3) A KANJI LIST, ARRANGED BY LESSON, AND CROSS-REFERENCED TO ENTRIES IN SAKADE'S "A GUIDE TO READING AND WRITING JAPANESE," AND NELSON'S "THE MODERN READER'S JAPANESE-ENGLISH CHARACTER DICTIONARY." THIS TEXTBOOK WAS PUBLISHED FOR THE HARVARD-YENCHING INSTITUTE BY THE HARVARD UNIVERSITY PRESS, 79 GARDEN STREET, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS 02138. (JD)
