IT IS INTENDED FOR THE PEOPLE OF SIERRA LEONE THEMSELVES, AS WELL AS FOR PERSONS WHO WISH TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WEST AFRICAN CULTURE AND THE KRIO LANGUAGE. INCLUDED IN THE FOLKLORE RECORDED HERE ARE PROVERBS, RIDDLES, AND FOLK TALES GATHERED IN FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE. THE KRIO PLAYS, ESSAYS, LETTERS, AND POEMS INCLUDED IN THE LITERATURE SECTION ALSO REVEAL IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF KRIO CULTURE. THE AUTHOR HAS CHOSEN REPRESENTATIVE SONG LYRICS AND CHILDREN'S GAMES AND HAS INCLUDED SEVERAL TRANSLATIONS FROM ENGLISH TO KRIO TO FURTHER ILLUSTRATE THE USE OF THE SPOKEN AND WRITTEN LANGUAGE. ALL OF THE KRIO MATERIAL IS WRITTEN IN A PHONETIC ALPHABET WITH AN INTERLINEAR TRANSLATION INTO ENGLISH. THE PHONETIC SYMBOLS ARE BASED ON THE LATIN ALPHABET AND ARE COMPARED TO EQUIVALENT I.P.A.
