RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN EDUCATIONAL THEATRE AND PROFESSIONAL THEATER, ACTOR TRAINING IN THE UNITED STATES, A REPORT ON THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA CONFERENCE (FEBRUARY 3-6 AND MAY 26-31, 1966).
GRAHAM, KENNETH L.
A TWO-PHASE DEVELOPMENTAL CONFERENCE WAS HELD IN MINNEAPOLIS ON THE GENERAL SUBJECT OF FOSTERING MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL RELATIONS BETWEEN PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC THEATERS IN AMERICA, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION DEVOTED TO WAYS FOR IMPROVING THE TRAINING AND EDUCATION OF ACTORS. IN THE FIRST PHASE OF THE CONFERENCE, A GROUP OF 24 REPRESENTATIVE THEATER EDUCATORS MET TO EXPLORE (1) THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEATER'S EDUCATORS AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTITIONERS AND (2) THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE OF ACTOR-TRAINING IN AMERICA. THE REASON FOR THIS EXPLORATORY CONFRONTATION LAY IN THE LONG-BORNE AWARENESS THAT A PROFESSION OF THEATER EXISTS IN AMERICA WITH NO SYSTEMATIC, PREPARATORY TRAINING FOR IT. THE EDUCATORS WERE AGREED ON THE NECESSITY TO UNITE THEATER'S EDUCATORS AND PRACTITIONERS INTO ONE WORKABLE AND ARTICULATE BODY FOR IMPROVING THE PREPARATION FOR AND PRACTICE OF AMERICAN THEATER, AND OUTLINED A PROCEDURAL PLAN TO THAT END. THE PLAN WAS SUBMITTED TO A GROUP OF 16 DISTINGUISHED PROFESSIONALS IN THE FIELD WHO JOINED THE EDUCATORS FOR THE SECOND PHASE OF THE CONFERENCE TO EXPLORE ACTUAL MEANS OF BRINGING THE EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL THEATERS TOGETHER. THE EDUCATORS AND PRACTITIONERS ADDRESSED THEMSELVES TO SEVEN TOPICS, EACH OF WHICH IS TREATED SEPARATELY IN THE FINAL CONFERENCE REPORT--(1) THEATER EDUCATION AND THE PRACTITIONER, (2) THE PROFESSION OF THEATER, (3) THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROFESSIONAL TRAINING FOR THE ACTOR, (4) THE THEATER, THE SCHOOLS, AND THE LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGES, (5) THE TEACHER, (6) ECONOMICS AND THE NONCOMMERCIAL THEATER, AND (7) NEEDED EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS. THIS DOCUMENT IS A SPECIAL ISSUE OF "EDUCATIONAL THEATRE JOURNAL," VOLUME 18, NUMBER 3A, NOVEMBER 1966 AND IS AVAILABLE FROM THE AETA EXECUTIVE OFFICE, JOHN F.
