AN INDIVIDUALIZED SCIENCE LABORATORY.
LIPSON, JOSEPH I.
THE LEARNING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH IS WORKING ON AN EXPERIMENTAL PROJECT TO EXAMINE METHODS OF INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTION IN SCIENCE AT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LEVEL. AT THIS TIME, THE EXPERIMENT IS FOCUSED UPON NON-READERS IN GRADES K-3. EACH STUDENT RECEIVES A TAPE CARTRIDGE AND A PLASTIC BOX CONTAINING MATERIALS FOR HIS LESSON. TESTS PUT ON TAPE ARE USED FOR THE PURPOSE OF DIAGNOSIS SO THAT WORK CAN BE PROPERLY ASSIGNED. AS FEW AS THREE SETS OF EQUIPMENT FOR EACH EXPERIMENT ARE USED. A COMPARISON TEST WAS MADE BETWEEN UPPER ELEMENTARY CHILDREN AND SOME COLLEGE FRESHMAN ENGLISH STUDENTS WITH THE RESULTS THAT THE ELEMENTARY CHILDREN LEARNING THROUGH DIRECT EXPERIENCE PERFORMED AS WELL AS OR BETTER THAN COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO LEARNED THROUGH TEXT BOOKS. THIS DOCUMENT APPEARED IN "SCIENCE AND CHILDREN," VOLUME 4, NO. 4, DECEMBER 1966. (COD)
