COLLEGE MAJOR DIFFERENCES IN NAVAL FLIGHT OFFICER TRAINING PERFORMANCE.
LANE, NORMAN E.; PETERSON, FLOYD E.
PERFORMANCE IN NAVAL FLIGHT OFFICER (NFO) TRAINING WAS EXAMINED IN RELATION TO MAJOR AREAS OF STUDY IN COLLEGE. EACH OF 1,231 STUDENT NFO'S WAS ASSIGNED TO ONE OF 16 COLLEGE MAJOR CATEGORIES. MEANS AND STANDARD DEVIATIONS OF EACH CATEGORY WERE COMPUTED ON EACH OF 24 TESTS AND TRAINING PERFORMANCE VARIABLES, AND THE TRAINING COMPLETION RATE WAS DETERMINED FOR EACH CATEGORY. SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES WERE FOUND AMONG 16 COLLEGE MAJOR CATEGORIES WITH RESPECT TO INITIAL SELECTION TEST SCORES, PREFLIGHT AND BASIC NAO SCHOOL GRADES, AND COMPLETION RATE. ENGINEERS AND NAVAL ACADEMY GRADUATES WERE CONSISTENTLY HIGH IN PERFORMANCE WHILE SOCIAL SCIENCE AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION MAJORS SHOWED CONSISTENTLY LOW PERFORMANCE. IMPLICATIONS OF COLLEGE MAJOR DIFFERENCES FOR SELECTION OF NFO'S ARE DISCUSSED. (THE DOCUMENT INCLUDES 26 TABLES.)
