BASED ON REPORTS FROM 901 INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION (725 AACTE MEMBERS AND 176 NONMEMBERS) FOR THE 1965-66 ACADEMIC YEAR, THIS SUMMARY PRESENTS THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION--(1) THE NUMBER OF UNDERGRADUATES WHO COMPLETED REQUIREMENTS FOR INITIAL CERTIFICATION FOR NURSERY, ELEMENTARY, JUNIOR HIGH, SENIOR HIGH, AND SPECIAL EDUCATION, (2) THE NUMBER OF POTENTIAL NEW TEACHERS INITIALLY CERTIFIED IN MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING (MAT) PROGRAMS (OR THEIR EQUIVALENT), AND (3) THE NUMBER OF MASTERS DEGREES, 6-YEAR DEGREES, AND DOCTORS DEGREES IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION. DATA ARE GROUPED BY STATE AND BY REGION. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF TEACHERS ELIGIBLE FOR INITIAL CERTIFICATION WAS 181,048, 174,036 OF WHOM WERE FROM NCATE SCHOOLS. THERE WERE 8,029 MAT DEGREES, 43,546 OTHER MASTER'S DEGREES, 2,330 6-YEAR DEGREES, 3,019 DOCTOR'S DEGREES, AND A TOTAL OF 57,287 GRADUATE DEGREES AWARDED IN A FIELD OF EDUCATION.
