TEACHER EDUCATION AND THE NEW MEDIA.
LESSER, GERALD S.; SCHUELER, HERBERT
PROGRAMS OF TEACHER EDUCATION IN THE UNITED STATES WERE DESCRIBED, AND THE CONTRIBUTION OF NEW MEDIA TO THESE PROGRAMS WAS ANALYZED. VARIOUS FACETS OF A TEACHER'S FUNCTION WERE DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF DESIRED COMPETENCIES AND CHARACTERISTICS. THESE FACETS WERE THEN ASSESSED IN RELATION TO TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS USING NEW MEDIA AS AN AID TO INSTRUCTION. THE FINDINGS INDICATE THAT EXPECTATIONS FOR NEW MEDIA IN TEACHER EDUCATION HAVE EITHER NOT BEEN VERIFIED THROUGH RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTATION OR HAVE NOT YET HAD SUFFICIENT STUDY FOR PROPER CONCLUSIONS AND APPLICATIONS TO BE DRAWN. IT WAS ALSO NOTED THAT MOST FUNCTIONS OF NEW MEDIA WHICH ARE LARGELY OPERATIONAL IN CHARACTER AND THEREFORE CAPABLE OF THE GREATEST IMMEDIATE EFFECT ON THE PROCESS OF TEACHER EDUCATION REMAIN, FOR THE MOST PART, UNPROVED WITH REGARD TO EFFECTIVENESS FOR TEACHER TRAINING.
