RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED TO ESTABLISH THE DEGREE OF SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE THAT IS REQUIRED TO UNDERSTAND SCIENCE ARTICLES IN CURRENT NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES. ALL ARTICLES ABOUT SCIENCE OR REQUIRING SCIENCE FOR INTERPRETATION WERE COLLECTED FOR A 6-MONTH PERIOD FROM NINE MAGAZINES AND 22 NEWSPAPERS. TERMS WERE CATEGORIZED AND RELATED TO THE SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLE WITH WHICH THEY RELATED. ARTICLES ON THE LIFE SCIENCES YIELDED 76 PRINCIPLES, PHYSICS 76, AND CHEMISTRY 17. THE TERMS AND PRINCIPLES IDENTIFIED ARE INCLUDED IN THE REPORT. INFORMATION ABOUT THE NEWS ITEMS ANALYZED IS PROVIDED. INCLUDED ARE (1) NEWSPAPER SOURCES OF THE ARTICLES, (2) FREQUENCY OF ARTICLES IN NEWSPAPERS FROM VARIOUS GEOGRAPHIC REGIONS, AND (3) SCIENCE ARTICLE LOCATION IN THE NEWSPAPER FORMAT. A DISCUSSION OF SCIENTIFIC LITERACY AND OF THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE STUDY FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION ARE INCLUDED. (RS)
