ABLAUT IN GERMAN STRONG VERBS.
ROSS, JOHN ROBERT
AN ANALYSIS OF ABLAUT IN GERMAN VERBS IS DEVELOPED WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF TRANSFORMATIONAL GENERATIVE GRAMMAR. THE HYPOTHESIS STATES THAT IF A VERB STEM IS KNOWN NOT TO BE REGULAR, THE TYPE OF ABLAUT IT UNDERGOES CAN TO A LARGE EXTENT BE PREDICTED ON THE BASIS OF SYNTACTIC OR PHONOLOGICAL FEATURES. THE FORMS ACCOUNTED FOR ARE ALL THE IRREGULAR VERB STEMS ON PAGES 805-812 IN "CASSELL'S NEW GERMAN AND ENGLISH DICTIONARY," (1939 EDITION). HALLE'S THEORY OF PHONOLOGY IS USED, AS WELL AS CHOMSKY'S NOTION OF THE COMPLEX SYMBOL. TYPES OF ABLAUT ARE EXAMINED AND A SYSTEM OF FEATURES IS DEVELOPED TO CLASSIFY THE PRINCIPAL PARTS OF THE VERBS. (KL)
