THE INSTITUTE OFFERED TEACHERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE THEIR LANGUAGE COMPETENCIES AND TEACHING SKILLS, AND TO EXAMINE, USE, AND EVALUATE NEW INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS. THE CURRICULUM INCLUDED COURSES IN METHODS, THEORY OF SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING, AND CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS. THERE WERE ALSO WORKSHOPS FOR ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY TEACHERS OF FRENCH AND SPANISH. SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE INSTITUTE WERE A DIAGNOSTIC TESTING PROGRAM FOR THE INSTITUTE PARTICIPANTS, REMEDIAL PRACTICE IN THE LANGUAGE LABORATORY, DEMONSTRATION CLASSES TAUGHT AS A PART OF THE WORKSHOPS, OPPORTUNITIES TO PRACTICE TEACH, AND THE USE OF THE NEW YORK STATE KINESCOPE SERIES ON THE TEACHING OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOLS. ADDENDA CONTAIN COURSE OUTLINES AND A DESCRIPTION OF THE KINESCOPE SERIES,"NEW APPROACHES TO THE TEACHING OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOLS." (AM)
