THE PROBLEMS OF MARKS.
DAVISON, HUGH M.
THE USE OF THE MULTITRACK, ACCELERATED, AND ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS CURRENTLY EMPLOYED IN HIGH SCHOOLS REQUIRES A CHANGE IN THE LETTER-GRADE GRADING SYSTEM. THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS ASSIGNING ROMAN NUMERALS TO THE TITLE OF THE COURSE TO DESIGNATE COURSE CONTENT DIFFICULTY OR REQUIRED STUDENT LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE. GRADE-POINT AVERAGE WOULD BE COMPUTED BY ADDING THE NUMERICAL EQUIVALENTS OF LETTER GRADES AND THE ROMAN NUMERAL AND DIVIDING THIS TOTAL BY THE SUM OF THE ROMAN NUMERALS. THIS PROCEDURE ACCOUNTS FOR THE VARIOUS SUBJECT-TO-SUBJECT LEVELS OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE WITHOUT ABANDONING FIVE-LETTER GRADES WITHIN EACH TRACK. (PP)
