A STUDY-CONFERENCE TO DETERMINE ACCEPTABLE SPECIFICATIONS FOR STANDARDIZED FOREIGN LANGUAGE READING PROFICIENCY TESTS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS. FINAL REPORT.
BOYNTON, DAMON
A PLANNING CONFERENCE WAS HELD TO STUDY THE QUESTION OF EXPERIMENTAL DEVELOPMENT OF STANDARDIZED FOREIGN LANGUAGE READING PROFICIENCY TESTS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS. THE CONSENSUS OF THE CONFERENCE WAS THAT STANDARDIZED TESTS WERE NEEDED AND THAT THERE BE TWO FOLLOWUP PHASES TO THE PLANNING CONFERENCE. PHASE 1 WOULD CONSIDER THE DEVELOPMENT OF THESE TESTS, AND PHASE 2 WOULD INVOLVE THE EXPERIMENTAL USE AND EVALUATION OF THE TESTS. THE CONFERENCE ALSO AGREED THAT THE TESTS SHOULD BE IN TWO PARTS. PART 1 SHOULD BE CONCERNED WITH BASIC VOCABULARY, SYNTAX, AND STRUCTURE, AND PART 2 SHOULD HAVE FOUR ALTERNATIVE PARTS CONTAINING SEVERAL READING PASSAGES WHICH ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF GRADUATE LEVEL FOREIGN LANGUAGE READING IN PHYSICAL SCIENCE, BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE, SOCIAL SCIENCE, AND THE HUMANITIES.
