A PILOT RESEARCH STUDY OF ART FACILITIES IN SIX COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.
BENSON, EMANUEL M.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO DEFINE SOME OF THE ISSUES THAT UNDERLINE CURRICULAR AND SPACE DECISION MAKING IN THE VISUAL ARTS AND TO MAKE CONSTRUCTIVE OBSERVATIONS THAT MAY SERVE AS GUIDELINES. VISITS OF A WEEK OR TWO TO EACH OF THE SIX INSTITUTIONS WERE MADE AND INTERVIEWS CONDUCTED WITH ADMINISTRATORS, TEACHERS, AND STUDENTS. OF THE SIX INSTITUTIONS STUDIED, THE CLEVELAND INSTITUTE OF ART HAS ACHIEVED A PHYSICAL PLANT IT CONSIDERS ADEQUATE FOR ITS NEEDS NOW AND IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. NEW YORK UNIVERSITY, MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, AND THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN HAVE PERMANENT LONG-RANGE PROFESSIONAL PLANNING DEPARTMENTS. PRATT INSTITUTE HAS A NEWLY HIRED STAFF MEMBER, AN ARCHITECTURAL CONSULTANT, WHO IS ATTEMPTING TO EVALUATE SPACE NEEDS AND PREPARE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR AN ALREADY APPOINTED ARCHITECTURAL FIRM TO CONSIDER. SARAH LAWRENCE HAS RETAINED THE CONSULTANT SERVICES OF A WELL-KNOWN CAMPUS PLANNER. (GC)
