AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO REPEAT, WITH REFINEMENTS, THE RESEARCH DESIGN OF THE HANNA-MOORE STUDY (1953) CONCERNING PHONEME-GRAPHEME RELATIONSHIPS. OBJECTIVES OF THIS STUDY WERE--(1) TO EXAMINE THE SOUND-TO-LETTER CHARACTERISTICS OF AN EXTENDED LIST OF 10,000 WORDS, (2) TO DISCOVER TO WHAT DEGREE THE SAME 80 PERCENT CRITERION OF PHONEME-TO-GRAPHEME OCCURRENCE IS TRUE THROUGHOUT THE AMERICAN-ENGLISH LANGUAGE, (3) TO ESTABLISH AN INDEX OF DIFFICULTY FOR EACH WORD LIST, (4) TO TEST RELIABILITY OF CERTAIN ORTHOGRAPHIC PRINCIPLES, AND (5) TO STUDY THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE THEORETICAL DIFFICULTY OF SPELLING FROM SOUND-TO-LETTER AND THE EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE OF PUPIL SPELLING PERFORMANCE. AN INDEX OF SPELLING DIFFICULTY OF EACH PHONEME FOR 10,000 WORDS WAS ESTABLISHED. COMIT PROGRAMING PROVIDED (1) LISTS OF WORDS FOR EACH PHONEME, (2) AN INDEX OF DIFFICULTY, AND (3) INFORMATION ON RELIABILITY. THE STUDY WAS CONDUCTED IN TWO PHASES. THIS REPORT IS FOR PHASE ONE ONLY. DATA FROM PHASE ONE SUGGESTS THAT THE AMERICAN-ENGLISH ORTHOGRAPHY MAY BE DESCRIBED IN TERMS OF PHONOLOGICAL STRUCTURE OF THE SPOKEN LANGUAGE.
