THIS STUDY DEVELOPED AN INDIVIDUAL TEST FOR ASSESSING A MUSIC INSTRUMENTALIST'S ACHIEVEMENT WHILE SIGHT-READING RHYTHMS. A MATHEMATICAL SYSTEM WAS USED TO CONSTRUCT 300 RHYTHMICAL PROBLEMS CONSISTING OF 1 OR MORE MEASURES OF MUSICAL NOTATION. BASED ON PRETESTING RESULTS, A TEST WAS CONSTRUCTED OF 200 FLASH CARDS ARRANGED IN ORDER OF DIFFICULTY. SPECIFIC STIPULATIONS WERE MADE REGARDING ADMINISTERING AND SCORING THE TEST. THE TEST WAS ADMINISTERED TO ALMOST 800 PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO WERE IN THE FIFTH GRADE OR ABOVE AND HAD COMPLETED AT LEAST 6 WEEKS OF INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC EXPERIENCE. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE TEST HAD CONSTRUCT VALIDITY AND THE JUDGES WHO SCORED THE TEST WERE RELIABLE. THERE WAS A LEARNING EFFECT BETWEEN FIRST AND SECOND TEST ADMINISTRATIONS. (JM)
