COMPARATIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF COMPOSITION SKILLS LEARNING ACTIVITIES IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOL.
MCCOLLY, WILLIAM; REMSTAD, ROBERT
CONTROLLED CLASSROOM EXPERIMENTS ATTEMPTED TO ESTABLISH A BASIS FOR EVALUATING THE COMPARATIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE WRITING ACT ITSELF, DRILL ON USAGE AND MECHANICS, SELF-INSTRUCTION, GROUP DISCUSSION, THEME CORRECTION AND CRITICISM, AND IMMEDIATE TUTORIAL FEEDBACK. EXPERIMENTS WERE CONDUCTED WITH ALMOST 300 STUDENTS IN GRADES 8 THROUGH 12. IT WAS FOUND THAT (1) ADDITIONAL WRITING ALONE DID NOT IMPROVE WRITING, (2) TUTORING, EVEN WHERE IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK WAS POSSIBLE, WAS OF MARGINAL VALUE AT BEST, AND (3) FOUR FUNCTIONAL COMPOSITION LEARNING-ACTIVITIES CONSISTING OF PRACTICAL STUDY, GROUP DISCUSSION, SELF-INSTRUCTION, AND CONVENTIONAL TEACHER CORRECTION PROVIDED AN INCREASE IN WRITING ABILITY.
