COMPARATIVE RESEARCH ON METHODS AND MEDIA FOR PRESENTING PROGRAMED COURSES IN MATHEMATICS AND ENGLISH.
CARPENTER, C.R.; GREENHILL, L.P.
THE GENERAL PURPOSES WERE (1) TO INVESTIGATE THE POSSIBILITIES OF PROGRAMING ENTIRE COURSES IN MATHEMATICS AND ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND (2) TO COMPARE DIFFERENT METHODS AND MEDIA, WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON CLOSED-CIRCUIT TELEVISION, FOR PRESENTING PROGRAMED LEARNING MATERIALS. TO ACCOMPLISH THE OBJECTIVES, IT WAS NECESSARY TO ANALYZE THE PROBLEMS OF PACING AND INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP CONDITIONS FOR THE LEARNING OF PROGRAMED COURSES. THIS RESEARCH QUESTIONED THAT THE BEST METHODS OF USING PROGRAMED MATERIALS ARE SELF-PACING AND INDIVIDUALIZED STUDY. IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT A LEARNER'S OWN SPEED MAY NOT BE THE OPTIMUM RATE. THE RESEARCH SHOWED SOME OF THE POSSIBILITIES OF USING COMBINATIONS OF NEW MEDIA WITH PACED PROGRAMS FOR INSTRUCTING LARGE NUMBERS OF STUDENTS SIMULTANEOUSLY IN TIME-LIMITED PERIODS OF INSTRUCTION.
