A SERIES OF INVESTIGATIONS WAS CONDUCTED TO COLLECT DATA ABOUT TEACHER ROLE COGNITIONS. ROLE COGNITIONS STUDIED INCLUDED TEACHER ROLE COGNITIONS HELD AND COGNITIONS ATTRIBUTED TO OTHERS. INITIALLY DATA WERE OBTAINED FROM A PILOT STUDY OF OVER 100 UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN AN URBAN UNIVERSITY. ADDITIONAL DATA WERE OBTAINED FROM APPROXIMATELY 700 RESPONDENTS REPRESENTING 7 COMMUNITY POSITIONS IN A MAJOR METROPOLITAN AREA AND FROM ADDITIONAL STUDENT RESPONSES OBTAINED FROM APPROXIMATELY 250 STUDENTS DIVIDED EVENLY BETWEEN EDUCATION AND NONEDUCATION MAJORS. ROLE COGNITIONS HELD BY RESPONDENTS AND ATTRIBUTED TO OTHERS WERE THEN RELATED. SIGNIFICANT AND SYSTEMATIC DIFFERENCES WERE REPORTED BETWEEN COGNITIONS AND THOSE ATTRIBUTED TO SCHOOL OFFICIALS, TEACHERS, AND PEOPLE IN GENERAL.
