BASIC SKILLS CITED WERE--PHONETIC AND STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS, COMPREHENSION, LOCATION, SKILLS, VOCABULARY, AND ENRICHMENT. EVALUATION, ORGANIZING, AND APPRAISING MATERIAL IN SILENT AND ORAL READING WERE STRESSED. OBSERVABLE CLUES TO POOR READING ARE--EYE MOVEMENTS, LIP AND THROAT MOVEMENTS, HEAD MOVEMENT, POSITION OF THE BOOK, TENSIONS SUCH AS GRITTING TEETH AND SQUIRMING, AND LOW INTEREST. NINE COMPARISONS ARE SHOWN BETWEEN EFFICIENT AND INEFFICIENT READERS.
